He currently serves as Senator of the LXII Legislature of the Mexican Congress representing Tamaulipas. He also served as Deputy during the LVIII Legislature. Tamaulipas internet police announced, during April, 2015, that it was investigating a security breach which targeted García Cabeza de Vaca and his family.
On April 17th and 18th, photos of him and his family members were published on different e-mail accounts.
This happened after the arrest of José Tiburcio Hernández Fuentes, alleged head of the Cartel del Golfo drug trafficking organization. In 2015 an informant to the United States. Drug Enforcement Administration accused him of receiving a $500,000 payment from the Gulf Cartel.
