Francisco Vieira was born on May 13, 1765 in Porto, Portugal. He was the son of Francisco Domingos Vieira and Maria Joaquina.

Francisco Vieira was born on May 13, 1765 in Porto, Portugal. He was the son of Francisco Domingos Vieira and Maria Joaquina.
During the period from 1787 to 1789, Francisco studied painting at Aula Regia de Desenho e Figura in Lisbon. The following year, in 1790, he left for Rome, where he continued his studies until 1796.
After studies in Rome, Francisco Vieira traveled through Italy, Germany, Austria and England. Since 1797 till 1798, the painter lived in London, where he worked with engraver Francesco Bartolozzi.
Some time later, Vieira left for Switzerland, where he got acquainted with Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman, who significantly influenced his work.
Upon his return to Portugal in 1800, Francisco was appointed the teacher of drawing at the School of Fine Arts at University of Porto. Two years later, in 1802, he was promoted to the post of the director of the school.
The painter fell seriously ill in 1805, while painting "Duarte Pacheco defendendo o passo de Cambalão em Cochim" for the Palace of Mafra. He tried to recover his health in Funchal, but to no avail.
Francisco Vieira was a member of the social circle of the ducal family of Parma, Italy.
Francisco married Maria Fabbri on July 9, 1799.
