After his Olympic career, Francisco Cañales was educated and trained at two of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country: Harvard College and Stanford University. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors at Harvard College in 1978, he then completed his medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1982.
Career
He is currently a plastic surgeon in Santa Rosa, California. Doctor Cañales was particularly interested in plastic surgery and elected to take on additional surgical training and received a Plastic Surgery Residency at Stanford University Hospital. Doctor Cañales now lives in Santa Rosa, California. They have two kids: Diego Cañales, the elder child, born December 16th 1991 in Boston, Massachusetts. Diego is a Stanford graduate, currently pursuing a career in computer science.
Siena Cañales, the younger child, was born December 1st 1993 in Santa Rosa, California.
She is now a student at Harvard University concentrating in the History of Science.
