Franco Fontana was born on December 9, 1933 in Modena, Italy. He is a son of Anselmo Fontana and Anita Fontana.
In 1961, Franco started his career as a photographer. Two years later, in 1963, he held his first personal exhibition in Vienna. Another early exhibitions were held in Turin in 1965 and Modena in 1968.
In 1981, he held different workshops in Arles, France, and Venice, and published a black and white work for the volume Contact, printed by Lustrum Press (New York). Also, in 1985, Fontana held a number of workshops at the University of Turin. In 1995, he participated in the Venice Biennale. Also, since 2000, Fontana has been carrying out a study on the microcosm of signs and fragments on urban street paving (Asfalti).
During his lifetime, the photographer collaborated with numerous magazines, such as Time, Life, Vogue, Venerdì di Repubblica and others. Also, Franco's works were included in more than 40 books in various editions and languages. Currently, he holds the post of an art director of the Toscana Foto Festival.
