François Hédelin, abbé d'Aubignac was born in Paris, France, Aug. 4, 1604.
He was reared in Nemours and became a self-taught lawyer at the age of 23. Shortly thereafter he went to Paris, was ordained in the Church, and became tutor to Richelieu's nephew. He spent the last years of his life in Nemours, and died there July 20, 1676. Aubignac took a violent part in many literary disputes of the day, particularly in that of the "Ancients" versus the "Moderns, " siding with the latter. He wrote numerous sermons and four tragedies, Cyminde (1642), La Pucelle d'Orléansd' (1642) ("The Maid of Orleans"), Zénobie (1647), and SainteCathérine, which served to illustrate his dramatic theories but failed as drama. His most noted work, however, and an important historical landmark in the French theatre, is La Pratique du théâtre (1657) (The Whole Art of the Stage, 1684). This work leans heavily on Aristotle, but advocates a greater degree of realism and adherence to the rule of the three "unities" for the dramatic poem. The posthumous Conjectures académiques sur l'Iliade (1715) questions the existence of Homer, thus anticipating Friederich Wolf.
