The French businessman François Pinault is one of the France's richest men, #65 on Forbes list of billionaires (2015), one of the few from the list whose wealth is self-made, not inherited. Apart from being a successful businessman, Pinault is also a famous art collector.

Education

Pinault enrolled in the College Saint-Martin school, in Rennes, in 1947, but then he dropped out.

Career

François Pinault is Managing Partner of Financière Pinault.

He started his first business in the timber trade in 1963 in Rennes.

In 1988, he floated Pinault S.A. on the stock exchange and progressively steered the company’s business towards specialised retail.

In 1992, François Pinault founded Artémis, designed as a vehicle to invest in high-growth potential companies in completely different sectors from those of Pinault-Printemps-Redoute. PPR entered the luxury market in 1999 when it acquired an equity interest in Gucci Group.

In 2003, François Pinault handed over the reins of his company to his son, François-Henri Pinault, who subsequently became Chairman of Artémis.

Achievements

  • Now, Pinault's holding company, Artemis owns Christie's International auction house, the flagship Printemps department stores, the mail-order business La Redoute, the leading music, electronics and book chain Fnac, a classic Bordeaux vineyard, Chateau Latour, luggage maker Samsonite, Le Point magazine, a first division French football club, the Vail ski resorts in Colorado, beauty products division of Sanofi and many other.

    François Pinault is one of the top contemporary art collectors in the world. In order to share some of his collection with the public, he set up two unique exhibition sites in Venice (Italy), the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana.
