François Rouan was born on June 8, 1943 in Montpellier, France.
In 1961, Rouan entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1965, François Rouan experimented with a range of different procedures, such as incision, covering, intermeshing and braiding. Three years later, he created a series of black and white canvas "tressages", a project, motivated by what the painter describes as a "minimalist temptation".
In 1973, Rouan visited Siena, Italy, where he began his work, which was inspired by Ambrogia Lorenzetti's frescoes. Five years later, in 1978, one of his major exhibitions was held at the Musée Cantini in Marseille.
In 1989, the painter created sketches of stained glass for the lower chapels of Nevers Cathedral.
In 1997, his retrospective exhibition was held at the Sezon Museum of Art in Tokyo. In 2003, on Philippe Dagen's invitation to the group exhibition "De Mémoires", Rouan made his first film "Clamouse", based on his photographic work. Two years later, he also completed such films, as "Le petit objet", "Chiquenaude dans l'abîme" and "Pierre à Laversine".
During the period from 2005 till 2006, Rouan worked as an invited artist at Le Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing, France.
In 2014, François Rouan held his exhibition at the Maison de la Culture in Amiens.
The painter also took part in many other exhibitions during his lifetime.
