(The year is 1793. The newly-christened French Republic li...)
The year is 1793. The newly-christened French Republic lies in ruins, besieged on all sides. The Royalist Chouans have risen against the Revolution, sparking a brutal war with no quarter offered on either side. Victor Hugo personalizes the struggle with his panoply of memorable characaters, from a peasant woman to a Republic Army Sergeant, who become first-person witnesses to the horrors of modern genocide. A stunning drama!

(In this 1886 French adaptation of William Shakespeare's A...)
In this 1886 French adaptation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Paul Meurice (1818-1905) focuses on the hilarious portion of the Bard's play in which the would-be actor, Bottom, is transformed into a ludicrous ass whom the fairy queen Titania is forced by enchantment to love. Meurice's version of Dream is a particularly smooth, timeless, and relatively modern rewrite of the original in prose. Meurice did more adaptations of Shakespeare than any of the other French Romantics, working with Alexandre Dumas, Père on a version of Hamlet, and with Auguste Vacquerie on Falstaff. First Translation into English.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(In mid-1500s France, Martin Guerre is determined to free ...)
In mid-1500s France, Martin Guerre is determined to free his father, the Comte de Montgomery, from an unjust prison sentence. Montgomery had dared to love the King's mistress, Diana de Poitiers; to prevent King Henry II from discovering her indiscretion, Poitiers had arranged to have Montgomery put away for life, under conditions where no one is allowed to speak to him--and no one knows his true identity. But Guerre discovers that his father still lives, and with his half-brother, the heir to the title, will do anything to free his long-lost parent--even take the city of Calais by force from its English occupiers. The King's daughter, Diana de France, supports Guerre, because she loves his half-brother. As the political war between the two Dianas reaches its climax, Martin is determined to force Henry into the open. But Henry has his own plans! Another first-rate historical drama by a master plotter!
