(This is a book of Christian apologetics, which follows in...)
This is a book of Christian apologetics, which follows in the main, with the differences due to modern methods and ways of thought, the line of Paley's great argument. Unbelief makes a greater "demand upon faith" than belief, for, as the author puts it, "Christian facts being what they are, we are helplessly shut up to the miraculous." We cannot follow the reasoning with the detailed attention which it deserves, but we may express our general assent with its purpose.-Another volume which we must be content to notice in general terms is Lines of Defence of the Biblical Revelation, by D. S. Margoliouth (Hodder and Stoughton, Cs.) Professor Margoliouth takes up the cause of conservative criticism.

Not illustrated. 1898 Excerpt: ...is of real importance, because the common habit in the churches of curtseying and bowing when the second sentence in the Creed is read, is supposed to be warranted by Philippians 2. 10. But as a matter of fact the Revisers brought the notion of bowing "at" the name of Jesus to this passage; they did not and could not get it out of the Preposition. And in that misrepresentation double harm was wrought. Not only was a tendency to superstitious and profitless habit encouraged, in which, alas! human nature needs no stimulus, but the definite Apostolic echo to the Master's words was entirely lost. In John 16. 24 we read: "If ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive." Who that reads Paul's words can doubt that this, not any kind of bodily posture, was what he meant? This is therefore another of the myriad gains of the Revised Version. IV. Finally, as to the Articles. The differences between English, Hebrew and Latin are especially manifest here, in that whilst we have two articles, the "Definite" and "Indefinite," Greek and Hebrew have but one, the "Definite Article," whilst Latin has neither. It is of most moment here to refer to the Greek. In their treatment of its Article CONFUSION OF THE ARTICLES 101 the Revisers of 1611 appear to have been generally in sweet confusion lost. Sometimes they put "a" for "the," sometimes "the" for "a "; sometimes "the" is just left out altogether; sometimes "that" is put for "the "; in all cases without authority, without necessity, without advantage. How mischievous and regrettable is the resulting distortion of th...

In issuing another edition of this work, I desire to express my thanks for very many tokens of appreciation, both in the press and in private letters. Beyond a few misprints which have here been corrected, I find no need for any serious alteration. The general principles involved are plain and ever applicable, whilst the particular references to the book called God and My Neighbour are warranted by the fact that it is now being sold at 3., so as to keep it still in circulation. Recent advertisements in The Clarion state that the author considers it still unanswered, in spite of the yery able booklet by Dr. Warschauer entitled A nti-N unquam, and many other exposures of its fallacies, besides the following pages. In the interest of truth, therefore, it may be well to show the reader by one or two typical extracts from The Clarion what kind of matter is put forward by this author as the ground of his unabated confidence in his own assertions. A ny man possessed of average intelligence and sincerity will be able to judge as to its rational or dialectic value. 1. As to the general case: Hundreds of able and educated ministers of religion have tried to answer my arguments. Not one of them has succeeded. The argument of God and My Neighbour is as firm as a rock. There is no living man who can shake it. There has not yet appeared a man who could even face it. How hundreds of men could try to answer arguments without even facing them, we are not told. But the implication is plain, viz. that all who have tried to answer this writer have been devoid of intelligence, or in one plain word, fools. So again :I claim to have proved everything I set out to prove so fully and decisively that no Christian, however great or able he may be, can answer my arguments or shake my case. I say that the greatest man in the world could no more disprove my case than I can disprove the l (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)
