( About the Book The Americas were settled by people migr...)
About the Book The Americas were settled by people migrating from Asia at the height of an Ice Age 15,000 years ago. There was no contact with Europeans until Vikings appeared briefly in the 10th century, and the voyages of Christopher Columbus from 1492. America's Indigenous peoples were the Paleo-Indians, who were initially hunter-gatherers. Post 1492, Spanish, Portuguese and later English, French and Dutch colonialists arrived, conquering and settling the discovered lands over three centuries, from the early 16th to the early 19th centuries. The United States achieved independence from England in 1776, while Brazil and the larger Hispanic American nations declared independence in the 19th century. Canada became a federal dominion in 1867. Also in this Book United States history began with the migrations of Indigenous people prior to 15,000 BC. Christopher Columbus's 1492 expedition enabled European colonization, with most colonies formed after 1600. By the 1770s, 13 British colonies held 2.5 million people along the Atlantic coast east of the Appalachians. The British government imposed new taxes after 1765 and would not agree to the colonists having a say in their determination. The American War of Independence, 1775–1783, ensued, resulting in independence, and another war was declared against Britain in 1812. The next 50 years saw the expansion of American states and territories through the west, however growth was curtailed by the costly American Civil War, which broke out in 1861 over the Confederate States' wish to continue the practice of slavery, and the Union's wish to preserve the union. By 1865 some 620,000 people died, making it the most costly in US history. Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from South America: Social, Industrial, Political...)
Excerpt from South America: Social, Industrial, Political; A Twenty-Five-Thousand-Mile Journey in Search of Information During his travels the author wrote letters for many of the leading newspapers of the United States, and at the same time prepared the notes which form the basis of this book. His aim has been to take the reader as far as possible through the scenes described, and for this reason the matter is, in the main, given as it was penned on the ground. The work is more a study of the commercial and social life of the cities, and a description of how the people live and work in the country, than a diary of travel and adventure. It describes the chief industries, notes the characteristic features of the inhabitants, discusses the resources and possibilities of the various countries, and incidentally points out the chances for the investment of American capital and the increase of American trade. Frank George Carpenter was born on May 8, 1855 at Mansfield, Ohio, United States; the son of George F. and Jennette Carpenter.
Frank received the degrees of A. B. and A. M. from the University of Wooster, Ohio, in 1877 and 1880.
His public has always appreciated his writing. Numerous adults have found entertainment and geographical education in the Carpenter letters and there are few school children who do not know and love the Carpenter Readers, with their simple language, anecdotes, and descriptions.
In 1879 Carpenter became legislative correspondent at Columbus of the Cleveland Leader. His health was so frail that when he married Joanna D. Condict, of Mansfield, in 1883, she was told by a friend that he would not live a year. In Washington, where he went as correspondent for the Cleveland Leader, he was at first obliged to spend much time in bed, but by dictating letters to his wife he was able to do his work. In 1888, accompanied by his wife and a new machine called a "caligraph, " he started around the world, having formed his own syndicate by arranging with fifteen newspapers to publish his weekly foreign travel letters.
A small son and daughter prevented Mrs. Carpenter from going on later trips as his secretary, but she was his business manager at home, collecting and filing geographical clippings, having his letters typed and sent out, and handling the finances of his syndicate. On some trips his daughter Frances traveled with him as secretary. The articles and the geographical readers and volumes of travel which grew out of them were intended, he said, "for ordinary people like myself and for boys and girls. " Carpenter's method was to take the children on an imaginary tour and to point out in each country what would interest and instruct them. His Readers include: Asia (1897); North America (1898); South America (1899); Europe (1902); Australia, Our Colonies, and Other Islands of the Sea (1904); Africa (1905). The series of Readers on Commerce and Industry includes: How the World Is Fed (1907); How the World Is Clothed (1908); and How the World Is Housed (1911). Though possessing successively several comfortable homes in Washington, Carpenter's favorite home, after 1896, was on a mountain top in the Blue Ridge, Virginia. The mountain, entirely owned and named Joannasberg after Mrs. Carpenter, was crowned by a rambling stone house, with a smaller stone house for library and workshop.
After Mrs. Carpenter's death in 1920, Carpenter lived at the Cosmos Club in Washington. In 1918 he gave up his syndicate in order to revise his Readers, but in 1921 he formed a new syndicate and began writing a series of World Travels (20 vols. , published). For this purpose he started on fresh journeys. Attacks of illness failed to discourage him; his last overtook him at Nanking, China.
Carpenter died of sickness in 1924 while in Nanking, China, on his third round the world trip.
