Frank Irving Cooper

Background

Cooper was born on May 8, 1867 in Taunton, Massachusetts, United States; the son of Joseph John Cooper and Mary Ann (Nichols) Cooper.

Education

Cooper graduated from Chauncy Hall School in 1885. He studied architecture under the guidance of Henry Van Brunt and engineering under Harry Keith.

Career

Cooper began his career as a draftsman for Henry Hobson Richardson (nowadays Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge). He was a supervising architect for the construction of the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh and later Shadyside Presbyterian Church in the same city. Also Frank established his own firm with offices in Boston and Pittsburgh. In addition, he partnered with Elmer Smith Bailey, forming the firm of Cooper & Bailey. They designed the new schools throughout New England. In 1916, that firm was reorganized as Frank Irving Cooper Corporation.

Achievements

• Cooper was known for his designing of the buildings, including Bristol County Superior Courthouse, Osborn Street School, Coughlin School, Rockland High School and Clark Hall of the University of Massachusetts.

On October 16, 1890 Frank Cooper married Anna Wellington (Sawyer) Cooper. They had three sons.
