He enrolled in high school at Salem High School (now North Salem High School), where he graduated the next year.
He studied at the University of Washington in 1946-1947.
His first novel, "Under Pressure" (1956), also known under the title "The Dragon in the Sea", introduced the theme so favored by him, the environment and its resources as the basis for a power struggle.
In 1965 Herbert publishe the "Dune". The main theme of the series is ecology, a subject that became important in American culture at least partly as a result of Dune's influence. Dune presents the history of a desert-planet--its environment, culture, and religion. It is seen through the eyes of a superman, who leads its inhabitants toward control of their own world and the conquest of others.
Sequels are: "Dune Messiah" (1969), "Children of Dune" (1976), "God Emperor of Dune" (1981), and "Heretics of Dune" (1984).
Herbert's other novels include Destination: "Void" (1966), "The Santaroga Barrier" (1968), and "The Heaven Makers" (1968).
He studied at the University of Washington in 1946-1947.
