Frank Lobdell was born on August 23, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.
Initially, during the period from 1938 to 1939, Frank attended St. Paul School of Fine Arts (present-day Minnesota Museum of American Art). In 1947, he enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts (present-day San Francisco Art Institute), where he remained until 1950, when he left for Paris. The same year, Lobdell entered the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and studied there till 1951.
In 1957, upon his return from France, Frank Lobdell started to work as a teacher at present-day San Francisco Art Institute, a post he held till 1964. In 1965, he was appointed a visiting artist at Stanford University. The following year, in 1966, he was promoted to the post of a Professor of Art at the same university, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
During his lifetime, the painter held numerous solo exhibitions in different museums, including the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Stanford University Art Museum and others.
Frank Lobdell married Dorothy Taffinder in 1946. Their marriage produced one child — Frank Saxton. Some time later, the couple divorced, and in 1952, Ann Morency became Frank's second wife. They gave birth to one child — Judson Earle. In 1996, Lobdell married his third wife — Jinx Rowan.
