He was educated professionally at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Lowell School of Design in Boston, and completed his training under architects in New York.
Beginning his career in Providence, Mr. Martin entered the office of Stone, Carpenter & Wilson and continued in the firm's employ over a period of years. In 1893 he formed a partnership with George F. Hall (Martin & Hall) and in the following years engaged in a general practice. The firm designed a number of public and business structures in Providence, noted examples of which were St. Xavier’s Academy, c.1895; State Normal School, c.1897; Roger William Park Museum, 1897; City Hospital, c.1910, and the Edwin A Smith Building, completed about 1911. In addition Mr. Martin was known to have designed a large number of private homes in various locations.
