Frank David McSherry was born on December 18, 1927, in McAlester, Oklahoma, United States. He was the son of Frank D. and Mary (Clinton) McSherry.
In 1953, McSherry received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma. McSherry also attended Texas A & M University and the University of Santo Tomas.
After serving in the U.S. Army Air Force, McSherry began his career as a commercial artist in 1953, remaining in this vocation until his retirement in 1974. His first book was Baseball Three Thousand. He co-edited over thirty anthologies during the 1980s and 1990s and often penned the introductory essays.
All included stories with science-fictional, horror, or detective-fiction elements, reflecting McSherry’s lifelong interest in those genres. Studies in Scarlet: Essays on Mystery and Detective Fiction, a collection of his essays, was published posthumously.
McSherry was notable for his books: A Treasury of American Horror Stories (1985); Nightmares in Dixie (1987); Haunted New England (1988); The Best Horror Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle (1989); A Treasury of American Mystery Stories (1989); and his last book, Civil War Women II: Stories by Women about Women (1997).
Frank was a contributor to many other anthologies, including Popular Culture and the Expanding Consciousness, A Mystery Reader, and Villains, Detectives, and Heroes, as well as to the major genre magazines, such as Armchair Detective, Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, Zane Grey Western, Mystery Fancier, and Mystery Reader’s Newsletter.

McSherry was a member of the McAlester Writers Guild and an honorary member of the Baker Street Irregulars. He also belonged to the Friends of the McAlester Public Library, where a collection of his written works and illustrations are displayed, and of the McAlester Arts and Humanities Council.
