Shumway was born on March 27, 1906 in Rochester, New York, United States; the son of Adelina Elizabeth Ritter and Robert Crittenden Shumway.
Shumway received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1928. Three years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the University College in Oxford.
Shumway began his career as an assistant pastor at Larchmont Presbyterian Church in 1931 and held it for three years. Then in 1935, he became the director at The Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company (nowadays Ritter Dental). Five years later Frank took a position of a treasurer at the same company. In 1953, he was appointed a president at The Ritter Dental Manufacturing Company. Also Shumway served as a chairman at that company from 1965 to 1976. In 1965, the Ritter Company merged with the Pfaudler Corporation, which later became known as the Sybron Corporation, which was a conglomerate Shumway founded in 1968. He retired in 1971, but continued as an honorary chairman of the company`s board.
Also in 1955, Shumway founded the Genesee Figure Skating Club after becoming active in the over-35 category of figure skating competition. He helped ensure RIT`s (Rochester Institute of Technology) building an athletic facility that included an ice rink. Frank became president of the United States Figure Skating Association in 1961.
He continued ice skating until just months before his death in 1992.
Shumway was a president of the United States Chamber of Commerce and commodore of the Rochester Yacht Club. He was a member of Genesse Valley Club, Great Lakes Cruising Club and Skating Club.
Shumway was an avid figure skater.
On September 8, 1930 Frank Shumway married Hettie Beaman Lakin. They have 3 children, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
