Engaged in black walnut lumber business in western New York, 1863-1864. In manufacturing sash, doors and blinds at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, 1864-1865. Sold out and took university course of 4 years.

Studied law; admitted to bar, April 28, 1871. Since then in practice of law.
