Began practice of law at Aurora, Illinois, 1891. Moved to Miami, Florida, 1910. Organizer and now senior member Shutts, Bowen, Simmons, Prevatt & Julian.

Founder, and formerly president and publisher Miami Herald. Former director First National Bank of Miami. Former director Miami Beach First National Bank.

Director Miami Bridge Company. President South Atlantic Telephone & Telegraph Company, 1917-1925 (when it was acquired by the Southern Bell Tel. & Tel. Company); general counsel Dade County Defense Council.

Lieutenant colonel on staff of Governor Cary A. Hardee, of Florida, 1921-1925. Local chairman Advisory Board of Salvation Army. Chairman board of trustees Jackson Memorial Hospital.
