(Christine's story explores the modern predicament, the ex...)
Christine's story explores the modern predicament, the experience of alienation and the quest for meaning in a world in which fashion, trend, and consumption have replaced the grand, cosmic myths of the past and created a way of life in which there is no longer any sense of Time, Place, or World. In Dear Ruth, Christine finds that she must retreat from the world that she had always called home, and this retreat leads her to the primordial world, where all things begin anew, where the clutter of modern life has been cleared away. It is a place of beginnings, or origins, a place of love, friendship, death, and nature--a place of spirit. It becomes both her starting point and destination in her search for meaning, understanding, and appreciation. And so her retreat becomes a quest, one that is fraught with danger and uncertainty. Christine's story offers the reader an opportunity to see, perhaps for the first time, those primordial landscapes and horizons that first captured the human imagination and became the source of all art, philosophy, and religion.

(Hemingway's The Sun also Rises is a profound response to ...)
Hemingway's The Sun also Rises is a profound response to the post-Narrative condition. The novel is important to Hemingway scholars because it presents the ontology, ethics, and aesthetics of Hemingway's worldview. It is important to post-modern theorists because it examines clearly and deeply the post-Narrative condition, exploring the philosophical and psychological implications of a condition that has been emerging since the Enlightenment, that most threatening of cultural conditions, nihilism, which can undermine the social fabric as well as the emotional, psychological, and ethical integrity of the individual if the condition is not accommodated in such a way as to enable people to survive meaningfully. Hemingway confronts the post-Narrative condition as a problem of nihilism and offers strategies that allow the individual and society to exist harmoniously and significantly. Also included in the book are essays on autonomous technology, the conflict between religion and science, the problem of nihilism in three Hemingway short stories, the theme of rediscovering the earth in The Sun Also Rises and the poems of Matsuo Basho, and the importance of rhetorical responsibility in the modern age.
