(As the speaker of the House of Representatives, Joseph Ad...)
As the speaker of the House of Representatives, Joseph Adam is used to being in control. From his position he makes things happen, crushes his enemies-both political and personal-and enjoys all the many trappings of power. Life is good, because he has the authority to make it so. When he first starts hearing reports of chaos and panic in the nation's cities, he assumes that this too can be controlled and confined. Soon, no one will be in control, and he has no way to change that. The world, as he knows it, no longer exists. The world is now under attack from a zombie virus. Caught in the middle of the unthinkable, Joseph struggles to make sense of the new reality. He's torn apart by anguish as one by one, his friends, family, neighbors, and peers fall victim to the virus. No one is safe, not even the elite and the powerful. As if that stress weren't enough, he's just been informed that he is the highest-ranking elected official in the land. As the new-and potentially last-president of the United States, Joseph and his best friend, Jason Wright, must now do what needs to be done to save humanity.

(The Fourth Republic, inaugurated in the autumn in 1946 af...)
The Fourth Republic, inaugurated in the autumn in 1946 after de Gaulle's resignation as head of the provisional post-war government, was one of the most turbulent and fascinating periods of modern French history. Under a succession of short-lived governments, battling with seemingly intractable problems at home and abroad and with a fragile balance of power among the leading parties that almost pre-supposed political instability, were laid the foundations of modern France. In this account, Frank Giles charts the complexities of post-war French politics, focusing on both the men and the issues which dominated the Fourth Republic. Chief among the latter were German rearmament and nationalist uprisings in France's former colonies, notably Indochina and Algeria, and among the former Jean Monet, who revitalized the French economy and established, with the European Coal and Steel Community, the beginnings of the EEC, and Charles de Gaulle, whose brooding presence dominated French politics until he was swept back to power during the extraordinary events of May 1958, when France found itself on the brink of civil war.
