The heavily illustrated account of the men who served under “Old Blood and Guts” is now available in flexibound format. In 1944, U.S. General George S. Patton was champing at the bit to lead the Allied D-Day invasion of German-occupied France. But instead, Dwight D. Eisenhower—then the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe—put Patton in charge of a decoy unit, the First U.S. Army Group. It would be almost seven weeks until Patton, known for his unruly demeanor and tendency toward vulgar speeches, would finally get his chance to take the now famous Third Army into battle. When he did, he took the unit on a ten-month rampage across France, driving through Germany and into Nazi-controlled Czechoslovakia and Austria. Along the way, his Third Army forces entered the Battle of the Bulge, breaking the Siege of Bastogne. It was a turning point in the war, and afterward the Third Army pushed eastward again. Contributing to its success was its truly innovative “armored warfare” fighting style, which avoided entrenched infantry warfare by continuously pushing forward, and it echoed Patton’s hard-charging personality. In Patton’s Third Army in World War II, military researcher and photographer Michael Green teams up with retired U.S. Army officer James D. Brown to bring you an illustrated overview of the Third Army under George S. Patton. Together, Green and Brown combine historical quotes and gripping narrative with fascinating photography to present a portrait of Patton and his men unmatched by any other nonfiction publication—a portrayal hailed by the Patton Museum Foundation as “a must for your enjoyment and collection.”

("Men at War" edited by Ernest Hemingway is an imposing an...)
"Men at War" edited by Ernest Hemingway is an imposing anthology (over 1000 pages and over 80 stories) of men in battle conditions. The range of time is from Biblical to the middle of World War II, when it was published. The bulk of the conflicts described come from the Napoleonic wars and World War I. Most are true, first person accounts, but some fiction is included. In all cases the effect that war has on the human condition, both good and bad, is effectively described. A truly awesome collection on a single theme. As with most anthologies, there are a few stories that do not inspire, but overall, a fine reading experience. I was first introduced to the book in the HBO series "Pacific" as being carried by a beloved commander who was killed. One of life’s ironies. I love Ernest Hemingway's writing style and the history of war, so I was very happy with this book. I especially like the amount of research put into historical data I gleaned from this book. I wish I would have known about it when I was in school for a report or review. E. Joseph Anna The deepest story in this one goes all the way back to King David of Israel with the fight to the death with Goliath of the Philistines. A truly epic work. Author Glenn Langohr

("One of the most enjoyable WW2 books to date." -War Histo...)
"One of the most enjoyable WW2 books to date." -War History Online “One Hell of a War” is a fascinating blend of firsthand accounts and the strategic decisions that led to them based on the history of the 317th Infantry Regiment from its initial activation in World War II through the end of the war. This book has all the elements everyone loved in “Band of Brothers” with the added integration of the strategic leadership decisions of Patton, Bradley and Eisenhower. Most interestingly, it contains well written and thought-provoking excerpts of the late Colonel James Hayes, who served with the regiment during its entire wartime service. The history books do not say a great deal about the 317th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Infantry Division in WWII. However, it was a regiment that accomplished rather startling results: first bridgehead across the Moselle, cleared out La Grande Couronne de Nancy, participated in the capture of Metz -- the first time in history that the fort had ever fallen to an assault, and, of course, participated in the Battle of the Bulge as one of the first regiments to arrive in the area after the German assault had broken the line. It suffered extremely severe casualties and contained some of the best men ever known. What others are saying about One Hell of a War... "One Hell of a War" is one of those books you simply can’t put down. It should come with a carrying handle and a sign warning "Do Not Disturb"…one of the most enjoyable WW2 books to date. -Phil Hodges for War History Online I love to read WWII history, and One Hell of a War takes the reader into the foxhole and onto the battlefield like no other book I have read … this is a must read book. -Jim Ravella, President, Folds of Honor Foundation It would be wonderful if every unit who fought during the war had a book like this portraying what was accomplished and how terrible war is for the men who actually fight it. -Gayalyn Wojtowicz, daughter of S/Sgt. Guyowen H. Howard, Sr. 317/B OUTSTANDING! “One Hell of a War” is a magnificent and masterfully told story that effortlessly weaves together the historical operations of one of Patton’s infantry regiments and first-hand accounts like no other book that I have read. A book this excellent is a rarity and should be on every professional reading list. -Colonel Frank Athanason, USA (Ret), Past National Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Dean Dominique's careful research and editing of Colonel James Hayes' combat memoirs rings true in a book that is both a scholarly work and an exciting read. Trust me, when you reach the section about the fighting and cold weather during the Battle of the Bulge, you'll want to put on a coat; it's that good. -Alexander Barnes; Author of "In a Strange land; The American Occupation of Germany 1918-1923." A remarkable story about an infantry regiment during WWII that played a key role in operations in Europe. Dean does a masterful job of weaving the personal accounts into the historical context of the major operations. With so few WWII veterans left, books like these are valuable resources. -Rich Killblane, Author of "The Filthy Thirteen; From the Dustbowl to Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest: The 101st Airborne’s Most Legendary Squad of Combat Paratroopers." Dean Dominique's new book, “One Hell of a War," knocks it out of the ballpark and is one of the best books I've read…You won't be able to put it down. -Andrew Z. (J. Patton Anderson was from Florida, the seceding state t...)
J. Patton Anderson was from Florida, the seceding state that was referred to as the "tadpole" of the Confederate states, but nevertheless was one of the Civil War's great military leaders. Anderson oversaw a large plantation, Casa Bianca, and his views meshed with secessionist views sufficiently for him to be elected as a delegate to the Secession Conference held in Montgomery, Alabama. After Florida seceded, President Davis appointed Anderson as a Brigadier General. Anderson engaged the enemy in the Western theater for four years under his mentor, General Braxton Bragg, who advanced him to Major General in command of the District of Florida. This is a complete biography of Anderson's life, including his service in the Mexican War, his appointment as United States Marshall to the distant Washington Territory, his adventure (with his wife, Etta Adair) of taking the 1853 Washington Territory census by canoe, his election as territorial delegate to Washington City, and his entire Civil War service. J. Patton and Etta Anderson's affectionate correspondence is an important aspect of this biography, revealing what it was like to be alive at this time and what it took to keep their family intact.

The current of ebb runs S.W. in the Fromveur Channel; but during springs it is sometimes met by the first of flood and deflected to N.N.W. and North outside the island, before low water. There is more danger with a weather ebb tide than with a weather flood in the Fromveur. In the Chenal Dd Four the tidal currents run knots at springs; but with much lees velocity at neaps, although abreast of La Grande Vinotriere they still run 3 knots. The set"of the flood is N.N.W., that of ebb S.S.E. Off Kermorvan Point the ebb is first felt at the time of high water at Brest; at Les PIStresses half an hour later; between La Grande Vinotriere and Beniguet Island it sets towards and on Les Bossemen during the first 2 hours,--flowing to eastward of them afterwards. The current of flood is first felt off Kermorvan Penineula one hour before the time of low water at Brest; at Les Pl&tresses one hour after; at Le Four hours after; and at La Helle 2 hours after. Eastward Of Benigdet Island, and also in the vicinity of Les Chambres, the flood sets N.E., and the ebb S.W.; both generally strong. Through the Goulet the tidal currents run strongly in and out, attaining a velocity of 3 knots at springs. In The Iroise the tidal currents when undisturbed by extraneous causes are quite regular. In the centre of the space they have not much apparent strength, but their velocity increases on approaching the opening of the Ushant Channels and the Raz de Sein. Their varying force in consequence of the influence of winds, renders the navigation of the Iroise difficult in thick weather, and under such circumstances it is advisable to anchor when...

(In this book, James M. Cahalan examines gender issues in ...)
In this book, James M. Cahalan examines gender issues in th e wri tings and in the lives of a dozen notable Irish authors and their fictional characters. Covering literature from the late nineteenth century to the present, he seeks to close the gender gap in Irish literary history by pairing similar works of fiction by both men and women. The author addresses, for instance, how women writers' characterizations of men compare with men's representations of women. Sensitive to other distinctions such as class and region, Cahalan reveals differences in perceptions of shared subjects-such as politic and autobiography-to illuminate a series of "double visions." Contents include readings of the Aran Islands narratives of Emily Lawle s and Liam O'Flaherty; the comic fictions and serious careers of Somerville and Ross and James Joyce; the coming-of-age novels of Edna O'Brien and John McGahern and Brian Moore; and "Troubles" novels by four authors-Jennifer Johnston and Bernard MacLaver ty, and Julia O'Faolain and William Trevor. The book's introduction is a far-ranging critique of feminist criticism and gender issues in Irish cultural history, while the conclusion touches on several other recent Irish novels and films.

Schaffner was born in Tokyo, Japan, the son of American missionaries Sarah Horting (née Swords) and Paul Franklin Schaffner, and was raised in Japan.
He returned to the United States and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was active in drama. He studied law at Columbia University in New York City but his education was interrupted by service with the United States Navy in World War II during which he served with American amphibious forces in Europe and North Africa. In the latter stages of the war he was sent to the Pacific Far East to serve with the United States Office for Strategic Services.
Returning home after the war, he found work in the television industry with March of Time and then joined the CBS network. He won directing Emmys for his work on the original 1954 CBS teleplay, Twelve Angry Men. Schaffner earned two more Emmy awards for his work on the 1955 TV adaptation of the Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, shown on the anthology series Ford Star Jubilee. He won his fourth Emmy Award for his work on the series, The Defenders.
In 1960, he directed Allen Drury's stage play Advise and Consent. His first motion picture The Stripper was praised, and he later made The Best Man, The War Lord, and The Double Man. They were followed by the critical and commercial hit Planet of the Apes. His next film, Patton was a major success for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director and the Directors Guild of America Award for Best Director. Later works included Nicholas and Alexandra, Papillon, Islands in the Stream and The Boys from Brazil.
Schaffner was President of the Directors Guild of America from 1987 until his death in 1989.
Jerry Goldsmith composed the music for seven of his films: The Stripper, Planet of the Apes, Patton, Papillon, Islands in the Stream, The Boys from Brazil and Lionheart. Four of them were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
Schaffner twice worked with actors Charlton Heston and Maurice Evans (The War Lord; Planet of the Apes), George C. Scott (Patton; Islands in the Stream) and Laurence Olivier (Nicholas and Alexandra; The Boys from Brazil).
