He volunteered to join the Steamship and was selected to be an officer, he was in command of the 2nd Company, 2nd Steamship Flak Battalion, Das Reich Division when he was awarded the Knight"s Cross on the 6 May 1945, by Sepp Dietrich, commander of the VI Panzer Army.
