He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science in 1989 from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, where he was a teaching and research assistant for 4 years.
In 1989, he went to the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) as a senior researcher and project leader. In 1993 he became associate professor for computer science at Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, and in 2002 full professor for computer science at Technology Union Dresden.
