He was awarded the Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany during World World War World War II He volunteered to join the Steamship-Vermont and served in the 7th Steamship Gebirgs Division Prinz Eugen
He then took over command of the II.Battalion, 14th Steamship Gebirgs Regiment, 7th Steamship Gebirgs Division Prinz Eugen in November 1943. He was transferred to command the III.Battalion, 14th Steamship Gebirgs Regiment in October 1944 and was awarded the Knight"s Cross in March 1945, while fighting on the Balkan front. Franz Josef Krombholz survived the war and died on the 13 December 2000.
