After studying in Munich and Berlin, he went to Rome, and in 1858 established himself as lecturer at the University of Munich, was appointed professor at the Polytechnicum of Munich in 1863 and director of the Royal Gallery in 1875.

Alter und Schauplatz der Weltgeschichte ist gering im Vergleich mit dem des gesamten Menschengeschlechtes. Unser Planet war wohl längst bewohnt, ehe aus dem urwüchsigen Ebben und Fluten der Menschheit die Ansätze eines bleibenden historischen Niederschlages sich bildeten. Auch dann als bereits die Pharaonen der drei ersten Dynastien von Memphis ihre monumentale Geschichte damit begonnen hatten, dass sie ihre Pyramidengräber als die unverwüstlichen Zeugen ihres Daseins an den Höhenrand des Niltales pflanzten, besaß noch kaum ein anderes Volk der Erde eine historische Kunde seiner Vorzeit. Dass die Kunstgeschichte mit der Weltgeschichte Hand in Hand gehe, ist klar. Kunstdenkmäler ohne historische Marken, wie die Zentralamerika's, sind zumeist ein versiegeltes Buch. Auch ist unbedingt zuzugeben, dass der Schauplatz der Kunstgeschichte noch weit enger begrenzt ist, als der Raum der Weltgeschichte, indem manche Völker in die letztere eingegriffen haben, welche entweder aller Kunst abhold oder bei vorgeschrittenem Kulturbedürfnisse zufrieden waren, sie von den Nachbarn zu borgen, ohne selbsttätig an ihrer Entwicklung sich zu beteiligen. Was dagegen das Alter der Kunstübung einzelner Völker betrifft, so überragt dies mehrmals das der historischen Überlieferung, wie es z.B. mit Ägypten, Mesopotamien und Etrurien der Fall ist, wo die Ergebnisse der Dankmälerforschung weit bedeutender sind, als die bisherige historische Kunde, und wo gerade die Kunstdenkmäler viel gewichtigere und verlässigere Bausteine für die Erkenntnis der ältesten Geschichte und des Lebens jener Völker darbieten als die entstellten Traditionen." ... Dieses Buch ist ein Nachdruck der historischen Originalausgabe von 1866.
