Franz Stuck was born on February 23, 1863 in Tettenweis, Germany. He was a son of Anna Stuck and Franz Stuck, a miller.
In 1878, Franz relocated to Munich in order to start his artistic education. Initially, he studied at the School of Decorative Arts. Later, during the period from 1881 till 1885, Stuck attended the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
Franz Stuck began his career as an illustrator for Fliegende Blätter, a satirical magazine. In his early years, he also became known as a draughtsman.
Awarded the gold medal for the painting "The Guardians of Paradise" at the Annual Exhibition at the Munich Glass Palace in 1889, Stuck devoted himself entirely to painting, becoming a portraitist, who was much in demand. Around 1890, he turned to sculpture and created a number of statues and statuettes. The first major work was "Wounded Centaur", produced in 1890.
In 1892, the artist co-founded the Munich Secession, an association of visual artists. The following year, Franz participated in the "Munich Secession" exhibition, where he showed his work "The Sin", which brought him success. In 1895, Franz Stuck was appointed a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where Paul Klee, Hans Purrmann, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers were among his students.
In 1897, Franz began to design his own residence and studio — the Villa Stuck. The artist himself designed the architecture, the interior decoration and the furnishings for it and the facility was considered one of the major total works of art of its day. For his furniture, Stuck received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900).
In the last phase of his work, Stuck concentrated once more primarily on sculpture.
