Mr. Unterberger was born in Innsbruck, Tyrol, Austria, on August 15, 1837. He was one of 11 children of an art dealer.
Franz Unterberger completed his studies at the normal school, and then started his studies in 1853 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, alongside Julius Lange and Albert Zimmerman. In 1858 he joined his mentor, Professor Lange, at that time tutor of the Archduchess Charlotte of Belgium, in his trip to Milan. However, the events of 1859 forced him soon to return to Munich.
After a brief stay in the Bavarian metropolis, in 1860 Mr. Unterberger continued his studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, which was the favored academy for Scandinavian painters studying abroad. Here he produced several atmospheric mountainous scenes. The landscape painters Andreas and Oswald Achenbach during his studies directed his talent in new directions. At the suggestion of his teachers, he traveled to Norway in 1860, where numerous works were created. His works were exhibited in Innsbruck, Vienna and Dusseldorf and were praised by the art critics. Inspired by this success, the artist also toured Denmark and the English and Scottish coast. In 1864 he left the academy in Dusseldorf.
In 1864 Unterberger moved as an independent painter to Brussels, the city he chose for his permanent residence. From there he visited southern France and, towards the end of the sixties, Southern Italy. He became a truly European artist in the 1860s. The first Italian painting, a Partie bei Neapel, was exhibited in 1868 at the Wiener Kunstverein. By the 1870s he was exhibiting throughout Europe, Hamburg, Antwerp, Brussels, Berlin, Stuttgart, Paris, Munich, Vienna and in addition Philadelphia and Boston. At the World Exhibition 1873 in Vienna he presented the picture Sorrent, Golf von Neapel. The sunny coastal scenery of the Adriatic Sea, and also Venice with its magnificent buildings, picturesque corners and the bustle of people became for Unterberger soon the center of his artistic creation. Like no other artist, he knew how to revive his pictures without distracting from the main subject.
Unterberger showed particular interest for the Tyrolean State Museum, which owns several of his works, including the painting Amalfi and the Gulf of Salerno.
While in 1870 Partie auf der Insel Capri was publicly exhibited, Franz Unterberger created two pictures of the Lake Achen. At the Tyrolean State Exhibition in 1893 he was represented with the paintings Motiv aus Dänemark, Posilippo Golf von Neapel und Amalfi, Golf von Salerno. Later he stepped back from the depiction of Tyrolean landscapes, only a small picture called Cimone della Pala is known as such.
Franz Unterberger was fortunate enough because his pictures were mostly sold during the exhibitions. At the Munich International Exhibitions his pictures were usually shown in the Belgian section. Even more frequently than in Munich he was represented at exhibitions in Brussels, Paris and London, where he was much more famous and his name was more popular than in Austria.
All in all, Franz Unterberger was known as a romantic style painter of architectures, water scenes and landscapes. He produced most of his artworks using oil on canvas technique. In the mid-1880s, Franz exhibited in Venezuela and in London at the International Universal Exhibition. In the 1890s, most of his paintings revolved around Venetian and South Italian scenes. When not traveling, he lived in Brussels. Later he regularly stayed in Neuilly, a suburb of Paris, where he also had a studio.
