In addition to a modeling course in the parental (bakery) undertaking from 1954 till 1956, Walther attended in 1955 the evening classes in painting in Fulda, Germany. He studied from 1957 to 1959 at the Werkkunstschule in Offenbach am Main, Germany (today the University of Art and Design Offenbach am Main) and from 1959 to 1961 at the College of Fine Arts in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. This was followed by a study under Karl Otto Götz at Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1962 to 1964 together with Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke.
Walther lived from 1967 to 1971 in New York, United States, and exhibited there for the first time his famous installation "1st Werksatz" in 1969 with Dan Flavin in the Museum of Modern Art.
Franz Erhard Walther was appointed professor at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg in 1971, at the age of 32, where he worked until 2005.
The artist lives and works after his retirement in Fulda, Germany.
