Fred Goodman was born on August 17, 1950.
Fred Goodman has served in a New York City music magazine Cash Box as a jazz columnist at the beginning of his career.
Later, he made a career writing about the music business and has served both as senior and contributing editor at Rolling Stone magazine since 1990. The co-editor of Rolling Stone – The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s, which was published that year, Goodman went on to examine the clash of rock and roll and big business in his first solo book, ‘The Mansion on the Hill: Dylan, Young, Geffen, Springsteen, and the Head-on Collision of Rock and Commerce’, published six years later.
In the book, Goodman outlined the changes which occurred in the music industry, highlighting the contradiction between rock and roll as Pure artistic expression and big business. He examined the business of rock and roll from the days of the British Invasion to the era of music moguls such as David Geffen, founder of Asylum records.
The debut book was followed by a couple of other high-quality editions about music, ‘Fortune's Fool: Edgar Bronfman, Jr., Warner Music, and an Industry in Crisis’ in 2010, and ‘Allen Klein: The Man Who Bailed Out the Beatles, Made the Stones, and Transformed Rock & Roll’ five years later.
Fred Goodman has also served as the chairman of Allen & Betty Klein and Company Music & Records and contributed to such periodicals and organizations, as Billboard music magazine, the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, the Village Voice, and Microsoft Network's Music Central.
Fred Goodman is an accomplished music journalist whose investigations of music industry full of tiny details are praised by readers and critics.
Goodman’s writings were featured in Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and many other well-known periodicals.
‘The Mansion on the Hill’ was named New York Times Notable Book and provided its author with Ralph J. Gleason Award. The book was also adapted into serial broadcasted on Microsoft Network’s Music Central beginning January 1997.
