Fred Nichols Kerlinger was born on the 4th of July 1910 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of George Edward and Lotte (Fisher) Kerlinger.
In 1942 Fred graduated from New York University with his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1951 he received a degree of Master of Arts from the University of Michigan and Doctor of Philosophy in 1953.
From 1946-1950 Fred Kerlinger served as a Civilian education officer at United States Army in Japan. He worked as a Research assistant at the University of Michigan in 1951-1953. During 1953 - 1955 F. Kerlinger held a position of an Assistant professor of educational sociology and psychology at Wayne State University, Detroit.
In 1955-1975 Fred was an Associate professor, then professor educational psychology at New York University and a Head of Behavioral Science department, from 1968 to 1971 at the same university.
Fred was a summer visiting professor at the University of Indiana in 1953, Columbia University of Teachers College in 1955, University of California at Berkeley in 1968 and at the University of Amsterdam during 1972-1973. From 1975-1980 F. Kerlinger worked as a Professor of psychology at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
From 1976-1977 F. Kerlinger was a president of American Educational Research Association. Since 1980 he was a Courtesy professor of educational psychology at the University of Oregon, Eugene.
