He has been editor-in-chief of Distributed Computing and associate editor-in-chief of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Security and Privacy. He has also edited Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computing Surveys, High Integrity Systems, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing, and Information Processing Letters.
Schneider is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1992), the Association for Computing Machinery (1995), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (2008). In 1996, Schneider was named Professor-at-Large at the University of Tromso, Norway.
In 2003, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Newcastle in the United Kingdom.
He has been named as the recipient of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Emanuel R. Piore Award for 2012.
