Career

Admitted to bar, in Minnesota and California, 1898. Stenographer to Charles South. Wheeler, of law firm of Bishop & Wheeler, San Francisco, 1898-1900. Resigned to go to Philippine Islands, as stenographer to William H. Taft, being made his private secretary when he was inaugurated as governor, 1901.

Accompanied Governor Taft to Rome, in 1902, in connection with friars’ lands controversy.

Went to Washington, District of Columbia, as his private secretary when he was made Secretary of War, 1904, accompanying him on his trips to Philippine Islands, 1905 and 1907. Resigned from War Department, July 10, 1908.

Secretary to President Taft, March 5, 1909-May 26, 1910. Envoy Extraordinary anu Minister Plenipotentiary to Morocco, May 1910-September 1912, to Siam, September 12, 1912-December 1913.
