Admitted to Illinois bar, 1897, and began practice at Chicago. City attorney Harvey, Illinois, 1907-1919. Member Illinois House of Representatives 2 terms, 1915-1918 (chairman judiciary committee, 1917).
Member Illinois Constitutional Convention, 1920-1922 (Chairman of Commission on judicial department). Judge Circuit Court of Cook Company, by appointment of Governor Lowden, to fill vacancy, 1921. Elected judge Superior Court of Cook Company, November 1923, term of 6 years, but resigned upon election as judge Supreme Court of Illinois, June 2, 1924, and reëlected, 1933, for term ending June 1942.
