Frederick completed a technical education in Berlin before he arrived in the United States in 1850, and soon settled in Chicago.
In 1856 Frederick began architectural practice in partnership with the late Edward Burling, with offices in the newly erected Marine Bank Building at La Salle and Lake Streets, of which they were architects. Among other early buildings with which Mr. Bauman was identified were the Bryan Block; the Ashland block (the original building); Metropolitan Block; Union National Bank Building, and the old City National Bank.
