Frederick received from the University of California, Irvine a B.A. in 1977 and a M.F.A. in 1979. He earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1987. At Princeton University he studied under Sheldon S. Wolin and Richard Rorty.
Frederick worked as assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley in 1988-1994. Since 1994 he has been an associate professor of rhetoric. He teaches and writes on the relationship between political theory and the philosophical tradition, theories of interpretation, aesthetics, and such figures as Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, and Michel Foucault.
Dolan has a skeptical attitude toward politics.
Dolan has been a member of International Association for Philosophy and Literature, Modern Language Association of America, American Political Science Association, American Studies Association.
Dolan married Victoria Carey Elliott (a journalist) on June 29, 1985. They have 2 children: Caitlin Emily, Alethea Cecelia.
