Ireland was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm roundarm fast. Ireland made his first-class debut for Kent against Hampshire in 1878. He played a further first-class match that season against Sussex.
He next appeared for Kent in first-class cricket some nine years later in 1887, playing two matches against Middlesex and Lancashire.
