Studied at Edinburgh Academy and University. Studied Art in London and became known as an illustrator of various popular works, notably An Unknown Country, by the author of John Halifax Gentleman.
Edited Chaucer's works for the Canterbury Poets Series. Published a novel, Body and Soul, and other works in leading magazines, etc. Became English Secretary in the Turkish Embassy in London.
Then Secretary to Sir Edgar Vincent at Constantinople. Travelled in Turkey, Egypt, Balkan Provinces, and other countries. Went through the unknown country of Hadramout in Southern Arabia shortly before the Theodore Bent Expedition.
Visited India to negotiate regarding contraband on Aden frontier, 1894. Resigned his appointment under Sir Edgar Vincent, and engaged in a mercantile career in India, where he became Secretary of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and other Trade Associations. Director-General of Commercial Intelligence to Government ol India since 1905.
