Born in Sydney, he attended North Sydney Grammar School and the University of Sydney, and served in World War I 1917-1918.

He then became the managing director of the family companies. He was elected, and was returned in the federal election later that year. He was defeated in the elections of 1929.
He defected to the Country Party in 1959.
Pratten died in 1977.
He was subsequently a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1937 to 1976 and a company director in Sydney.
