Inspector of Army Signalling, 1875-1880.
Commandant of Pretoria, 1880-1881. Organised and trained a battalion of rifles to take part in defence of town against Boers (despatches, Baronet-Lieutenant-Colonel).
C.R.E. base at Suakin, 1885 (despatches, medal with clasp and bronze star). Chief Engineer Ireland, 1889-1894.
Decorated for services in South Africa and Suakin.
