Studied at Elizabeth College Guernsey. Lorient, Brittany; Gotesberg-ou-the-Rhine.
Joined 80th Regiment 1850. Served in Burma; present at Martaban and storming of Rangoou (was first up at the pagoda gate). At taking of Prome (Burmese medal, clasp).
Invalided home; exchanged to 7th Royal Fusiliers, Crimean War. Wounded at Alma, 20 September 1854. Quarries, 7 June; wounded Redan, 18 June 1855.
Present at Inkerman and Sebastopol (passing over 90 nights in the trenches, medal, 3 clasps, despatches, Knight of the Legion d’Honneur and Order of the Medjidie). Was the only officer who served with the Headquarters of the Fusiliers from its embarkation to the fall of Sebastopol. Commanded 3rd Brigade 1st Div.
Khyber Column in the Afghan Campaign (medal, clasp, despatches thrice). Decorated for military services. Knight of the Legion of Honour; Justice of the Peace for Surrey; Retired List.
