(The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration a...)
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Excerpt: .... The Jn U K I ti B K I T O N.. 539 In both cases we had reduced the enemy to the lowest depth of misery: in both cafes we begged that peace which we might have commanded: in both cafes we restored to the enemy the greatest part of the conquests we had made during the war: and in both cases we suffered them with impunity, to evade the performance of some of the most essential and important articles of the treaty. But there is one circumstance, in which the peace of Paris is more disgraceful than even that of Utrecht. For though in the latter we went a begging for a peace, yet did we not employ any foreign ambassador to go a begging it for us: whereas in the latter we not only employed such an ambassador, viz. the count de Viri, the Sardinian ambassador; but we even settled upon him, for the friendly office, a pension of loool. a year, which he still enjoys. A fourth point of resemblance between the present reign and some of the preceding ones, is the conduct of the government with regard to the pardon of murderers. It has always been observed, to the honour of King George I. and King George II. that, whatever indulgence they might shew to other criminals, they never shewed any to murderers; convinced, it would appear, that the crime of murder, of all others the most atrocious, ihould ever meet with the punishment, which the law denounces against it. And so constantly and invariably did they adhere to this maxim, that I believe it would be impossible to produce a single instance, during the whole course of their reigns, where they deviated from it. Earl Ferrers himself, notwithstanding his noble birth, his high rank, his powerful connections, and even his remote alliance to the royal family, was obliged to submit to the fate inflicted upon the meanest felon...

Excerpt: ...history, every mean art has been employed, and every dishonourable and reproachsul method made use of, not only to disgrace and ruin the nation at that time, but to prevent posterity from blessing the memory of a great patriot, who wislied to have entailed on his country, dignity, wealth and empire. I am sure the sagacious reader will immediately apprehend that I must mean to allude to the great Duke of Marlborourh, and the four last years of queen Anne, when the saction of the Tories patched up the insamous, and, in the stile of that time, the felonious peace of Utretcht, (fo inadequate to the successes of that war) the mischiess of which we have ever since most severely felt. Almost every thing won from the French by the wisdom or valour of a Whig administration, these vipers bred and nourished in the bofom of our country, sacrisiced to Franc from a lust of power, and the interested views of their saction, ever propitious and savourable to the designs of the ancient enemy of this kingdom. In great fouls the virtuous deeds even of a rival or an enemy liave kindled the same noble flame. After Miltiades had gained the battle of Marathon, Themistoc/es gave up all the dissipated pleasures of an irregular youth, and applied himself solely to public affairs, declaring that he could not sleep for the trophies of Miltiades. To this generous emulation in the career of glory, his country was indebted for the important victory at Salamis, and in consequence for the preservation of the liberties of all Greece. In little, narrow, selsish minds, the effect is directly opposite. Instead of covering himself with sair laurels, won in the cause of virtue, the vulgar wretch will endeavour to blast or steal others, which a generous mind would think almost...

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself.
