(Take part in a fascinating spiritual journey around the w...)
Take part in a fascinating spiritual journey around the world with renowned artist, sculptor, and author Frederick Franck as he visits Sri Lanka, India, the Himilayas, and Japan. Along the way he relates events of the journey to memories of his life, tying past and present together with a series of flashbacks that add depth and richness to the narrative. Sit in on intimate, probing conversations with the twentieth-century giants of faith he met along the way: Pope John XXIII, the Dalai Lama, Albert Schweitzer, D.T. Suzuki, and many others. Using his personal journey to the East to highlight the encounter between Christianity and the religions of the East, he explores the deep spiritual resonances between Buddhism and Christianity. The culmination of wisdom from a lifelong pilgrimage by the author of the classic book, The Zen of Seeing, this is an exciting journey with a guide who is wise, insightful, joyous, and full of hope. Franck's descriptions of his travels and his experiences along the way shine with the vividness only an artist could capture. If you are one of those restless spiritual pilgrims who feels the need to go beyond all formal religion and any single tradition, you would be wise to observe where Franck points in this gem of a book. Includes over 50 charming drawings which Franck sketched along the way.

(Readers of Frederick Franck's The Zen of Seeing will shar...)
Readers of Frederick Franck's The Zen of Seeing will share his delight in discovering the Western mysticism of the 17th century poet, Angelus Silesius, who described his four days and nights of illumination in epigrams published as The Cherubinic Wanderer. Franck has translated more than half of these deceptively simple verses, which are the most accessible and articulate expression of pure mystical illumination that any Westerner has bequeathed to us. Franck shows how the Silesian poet's verses form a bridge between Eastern and Western mysticism by providing a running commentary of observations by the ancient Zen masters of China and Japan.

Take a luminous journey deep into the heart of hidden Venice, with Frederick Franck as your guide. His quietly evocative drawings and descriptions bring to vivid life the city of islands, La Serenissima, the Queen of the Sea, “that most human of cities,” Venice. Franck explores the exquisite nooks and crannies and unique people and places of Venice, providing an enlivening glimpse into a city he sees as a microcosm of creation, “an immense and living indoor and outdoor studio.” “Venice is so much more than canals, bridges, gondolas. It is an unbroken sequence of ever-changing moods; festive, frivolous, elegiac and melancholy, forever foreign yet totally intimate.” — from Seeing Venice

"Those who seek the Buddha outside of their own mind make the Buddha into a devil." —Dogen "If Christ were born a thousand times in Galilee it was all in vain until he is born in thee, in me." —Angelus Silesius "Sentient beings are intrinsically Buddhas. It is like water and ice; without water ice cannot exist." —Hakuin This beautiful little book is filled with the unique art, words, and calligraphy of Frederick Franck. Some of the most profound teachings of Zen Buddhism and Christianity inspire readers through short, aphoristic sayings to meditate and to get more in touch with the innermost workings of life in and around themselves. Frederick Franck writes: "When at seventeen I had become a medical student in Holland, my eye fell on a slim volume that carried in large yellow characters the title ‘ZEN.’ This was in 1926, when Zen was still unknown in the West. "Zen has been to me that which brings us into intimate contact with the world around us and, at the same time, with ourselves. This book, a revised edition of ‘Echoes from the Bottomless Well,’ came to me at a moment of deep crisis. "The quotations from the Zen writings and words of the great Zen masters, as well as some sayings from the Gospels, were not culled from printed pages. They welled up irresistibly from some eight decades of reflection and meditation from deep down, sometimes in words, sometimes at first in images, for I am by nature not a philosopher but an image-maker. The images that came so compellingly, witness to the experience of Zen as it affected my life." This little book will be a wonderful, encouraging friend on the path.
