Westminster; Pembroke College Cambridge (Master of Arts). At age of ‘21 came out to Australia and took up squatting pursuits.
Went to South Africa with 2nd Contingent New South Wales Mounted Rifles, January 1000. Took part in engagements at Osfontein and Driefontein, and made the general advance to Pretoria under Lieutenant-Colonel De Lisle in General Ian Hamilton’s column. With De Lisle at Diamond Hill.
Was there for two months under Lieutenant-Colonel Hickman, and subsequently and up to April 1901, served continuously with Lieutenant-Colonel De Lisle in his operations in the O.R.C. and Cape Colony.
Decorated for service in the field Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900. Lieutenant New South Wales Mounted Rifles.
