Commissioned Second lieutenant United States Marine Corps, 1984, advanced through grades to lieutenant colonel. With MCAS, Beaufort, South Carolina, Sheik Isa Air Base, Bahrain, 1990. Mission Commander Operation Desert Storm.

F/A-18 E/F project pilot Naval Air Warfare Center-Aircraft Division, Patuxent River, Maryland, 1993. Astronaut National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Houston, since 1994, with Vehicle Systems and Operations Branch, also served as deputy shuttle operations branch, astronaut office, lead for Kennedy Space Center Operations support, chief astronaut office, Capcom Branch. Pilot STS-88 Endeavor Mission (first International Space Station assembly mission), 1998, STS-105 Discovery Mission, 2001.

Crew Commander STS-117 Atlantis Mission, 2007.
