Sheriff Essex County (New Jersey), 1865. Lay judge Essex County Court Common Pleas. Mayor of Newark, 1870-1874.

Treasurer, librarian New Jersey History Society, 1881-1897, also 1st regular librarian. Translated foreign works. Published English Songs from Foreign Tongues, 1879, The Self-Tormentor, 1885.
