LAWRENCE, Frederick William Pethick was born on December 28, 1871. Son of Alfred Lawrence.
Eton (Captain of the Oppidans, 1891). Trinity College, Cambridge. 4th Wrangler, 1894; 1st Class Natural Science Tripos, 1895.
2nd Smith’s Prizeman, 1896. Master of Arts.
President of the Union, 1896. Adam Smith Prizeman for Economics, 1897. Fellow of Trinity, 1897.
After leaving Cambridge went round the world, visiting India, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, and United States of America. Lived in the Mansfield House University Settlement, Canning Town, 1899-1901. Selected L.U. candidate for N. Lambeth, but retired owing to opposition to South African War, 1900.
Went to South Africa. On return became Honourable Secretary of South African Women’s and Children’s Distress Fund. Obtained a controlling interest in The Echo newspaper, 1901.
Edited the paper, 1902-1905, and when it ceased paid the staff and the creditors out of his own pocket. Active supporter of the W.S.P.U. Joint-editor of Votes for Women. Barrister-at-Law.
