Promoted Captain, by selection, in 5th Dragoon Guards, 1878. Served in Jowaki Expedition, 1877. In Afghan War, 1878-1880 (brevet of Major).
Burma Campaign, 1885-1887-89, in charge of intelligence branch (brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel, despatches thrice). Military Attache in Japan, 1897-1898. Commanded 1st Cavalry Brigade, 1899- 1903.
