Frederik was educated as a painter and studied with Eckersberg.
Busch participated in making the decorations for the Museum of Thorvaldsen, Copenhagen. He worked with Eddelin in the Chapel of King Charles IV, but interrupted the job in 1848 to start work as a master painter in Naestved. In addition he painted portraits, and in 1859 started to support himself as a photographer. In 1875 he began teaching at the technical school of Frederiksberg and at the Royal Academy of Art in Co-penhagen.
Considered one of Denmark's best outdoor photographers, he produced cartes de visite, landscapes and topographic photographs.
