1923-1925 studied at Institute of Screen Art, Leningrad. Since 1924 has worked in films, first as assist, director, then as director and script writer.
Cheka officer during the Civil War, 1919-1921. Worked in the script department of Sevzapkino. In 1924, founded КЕМ (Film Experimental Workshops) where he made his first film, Skar/atina.
With E. Ioganson, made Kat'kaBumazhnyi Ranet, 1926. Other films include Dom v Sugrobakh, 1928, and Oblomok Imperii, 1929. From 1929-1931, studied at the Film Academy.
With S. Iutkevich, made Vstrechnyi, 1932. Also made the documentary Pered Sudom Istorii, 1965, using rare archive material.
Member, Communist Party, since 1919.
Member, Presidium, USSR Cinematographers Union from 1960. Communist Party member from 1919.
