Career
The Knight"s Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Thorwest was killed in action on 1 November 1944 when Torpedoboot Ausland destroyer TA 20 (ex-Italian Urakaze-class destroyer Audace) was attacked and destroyed by HMS Avon Vale and HMS Wheatland.
